Preparing for the New Youth Football Framework: Changes Coming in 2026/27

As passionate, dedicated coaches specialising in youth football development, we’re committed to inspiring the next generation through fun, skill-focused, and player-centred sessions. Whether it’s our 1-to-1 personalised coaching, dynamic group training sessions, exciting birthday parties on the pitch, structured academy programmes, or action-packed holiday camps, everything we do is designed to build confidence, technical ability, decision-making, and a genuine love for the game. Led by Pro Shaw,  an experienced coach with a deep understanding of what makes young players thrive, we create positive, supportive environments where every child feels valued and empowered to progress at their own pace.

With the 2026/27 season fast approaching, the football landscape for young players in England is about to evolve significantly. The FA’s FutureFit initiative, a new progressive framework for grassroots youth football,  is set to roll out from the start of the 2026-27 season. This exciting update builds on previous reforms (like those in 2012) and aims to make the game even better for children: more time on the ball, more involvement in matches, higher physical activity levels, and ultimately a more enjoyable, developmental experience from the very beginning.

At Pro Shaw’s Coaching, we’re already gearing up to embrace these changes fully. Here’s what you, as parents, players, and fellow coaches, need to know about the key updates, and how we’re preparing to help every young footballer make the most of them.

The Vision of FutureFit

The FA’s goal is clear: tailor grassroots youth football even better to children’s needs, learning styles, and development stages. By focusing on engagement, enjoyment, and long-term growth, FutureFit seeks to keep more kids playing longer and help them fall in love with football. The changes prioritise quality over quantity,  more touches, better decision-making opportunities, and formats that match how young brains and bodies learn best.

Key Changes Starting 2026/27

  • Introduction of 3v3 as the Entry Format for U7s The biggest headline: U7s will move to a 3v3 format (three players per side on smaller pitches). This isn’t about making the game “easier”, it’s about maximising touches, involvement, and success moments right from a child’s first steps into organised football. More ball time means faster skill development, quicker decisions, and far less standing around waiting for the ball to come near. It’s the perfect, fun introduction that aligns with how children naturally play and learn.
  • Smaller Formats Played for Longer The framework extends the use of small-sided games further up the age groups, ensuring players stay in developmentally appropriate environments longer. This keeps sessions dynamic, reduces pressure, and allows technical, tactical, and social skills to flourish before moving to larger formats.
  • Focus on Physical Activity, Engagement & Enjoyment Overall, the changes aim to boost time on the pitch, increase physical exertion through active participation, and create positive first (and ongoing) experiences so children want to keep coming back.

How Pro Shaw’s Coaching is Preparing

We’re thrilled about FutureFit because it mirrors so much of what we already believe and deliver: player-centred coaching, lots of ball work, individual attention, and sessions built around fun and confidence-building. Here’s how we’re getting ready:

  • Adapting our academy and group sessions to incorporate more small-sided, high-touch activities that prepare players for 3v3 and beyond.
  • Enhancing our 1-to-1 and holiday camp programmes with drills and games that emphasise quick decisions, ball mastery, and enjoyment in smaller formats.
  • Staying fully up-to-date with FA workshops, resources, and guidance so our coaching remains aligned with the latest best practices.
  • Supporting parents and young players with clear communication about what the changes mean, turning any uncertainty into excitement about better development opportunities.

For us, these updates are a chance to make an even bigger positive impact. By embracing smaller formats early, we can help children build stronger foundations in technique, awareness, and love for the game, setting them up for success whether they stay grassroots or aim higher.

What This Means for Your Child

If your son or daughter is in grassroots football (especially around U7 level and up), the 2026/27 season will feel fresh and more engaging. They’ll get more chances to touch the ball, score, defend, and celebrate, all in a way that feels natural and fun. Parents often tell us how much their kids thrive when sessions prioritise involvement over rigid structure, and FutureFit takes that philosophy nationwide.

If you’re looking for coaching that’s already thinking ahead and preparing young players for this exciting new era, we’d love to welcome you to Pro Shaw’s Coaching. Whether it’s a one-off session, regular group training, a holiday camp burst of development, or personalised 1-to-1 support, we’re here to help every child shine.
